About the Bellflower Project

The Production

We are building the main part of the Bellflower as a full size set (it’s a much smaller vessel than a Firefly). The first story, about forty minutes in length, has been written. If all goes well, we would like to shoot other scripts after that; we are working on another idea, and would welcome contributions from other writers. We are not working to a particular story length, so later episodes could be anything from three to ninety minutes long. Obviously, we will not see any of the Firefly characters, although we may include references to events from the series. (And maybe a shoutout to some other fan films.) So far, we have no definite production schedule – Bellflower is entirely an unfunded, amateur production, being done in our spare time, all for the love of the ‘verse, and we plan to do the best job that we possibly can. Once we can see the end in sight, we will announce a tentative release date. Until then, we will try to keep this site up to date with details of our progress.

The Story

The Bellflower is a Sandfly class light transport ship, delivering mail, supplies, and news to the outer planets. Its captain, pilot and owner is Jesse, who inherited the ship when her parents died in a Reaver attack. A few years ago she picked up Carol, an ex-military engineer, who keeps the ship flying in exchange for a place to stay. We will also meet Jesse’s younger sister Mary, who survived the attack that took their family. Jesse usually acts as an independant contractor for Aircom, based in the Essendon Docks on New Melbourne. Aircom themselves subcontract their work from BlueSun Postal. As freelancers, the Bellflower crew usually end up with the least desirable jobs – high risk runs to the outer planets. From time to time, they have been known to accept less legitimate cargo, if the price is right.
